Chlorine, bromine or minerals: which hot tub sanitizer do I need?

Chlorine

Granules: Leisure Time Spa 56 Chlorinating Granules are fast-dissolving dichlor granules for routine sanitation and periodic superchlorination, in 2 lb and 5 lb containers. Softcare by Softub Chlorine is a quick-dissolving stabilized chlorinating granule described as ideal for vinyl spas.

Cartridges: FROG @ease SmartChlor cartridges are prefilled and self-regulating, and each lasts about 3 to 4 weeks. They come for the floating @ease system and for spas with a built-in FROG In-Line well.

Bromine

Tablets: Leisure Time Bromine Tablets are low-odor, slow-dissolving tablets made for use in a compatible feeder or floater.

Cartridges: FROG Serene bromine cartridges are prefilled, last 2 to 4 weeks depending on bather load and spa size, and fit Serene floating and in-line systems. Use standard bromine test strips with Serene, not @ease strips.

Minerals

FROG Mineral Cartridge: the mineral half of the FROG system. It lasts up to 4 months and works alongside a SmartChlor or bromine cartridge.

FROG Filter Mate: a mineral stick that sits inside the filter cartridge core and lasts up to 4 months. It is used with chlorine or bromine that you add separately; it is not a complete water-care system on its own. The Softub version is packaged for Softub spas.

Starter kits and bundles

Startup kits put a floating FROG system in a hot tub, refill kits keep it running, and the 4-month bundles pack cartridges, test strips and shock together. In-line bundles are for spas built with the FROG In-Line well; if your spa has no well, use a floating system.

Hot Tub Sanitizer FAQs

Do minerals replace chlorine or bromine?

No. FROG Filter Mate must be used with an EPA-registered chlorine or bromine product, and the FROG Mineral Cartridge works alongside a SmartChlor or bromine cartridge. The minerals let the spa run on a lower chlorine or bromine level; they do not stand in for it.

Do I need in-line or floating FROG cartridges?

If your spa has a built-in FROG cartridge holder (a round well in the filter area with a dial), the in-line cartridges snap straight in. If there is no in-line well, use the floating system instead.

How long do FROG cartridges last?

A SmartChlor cartridge lasts about 3 to 4 weeks, a Serene bromine cartridge 2 to 4 weeks depending on bather load and spa size, and a mineral cartridge up to 4 months.

Why do regular chlorine test strips read low with FROG @ease?

SmartChlor holds a deliberately low free-chlorine level, so ordinary strips misread it. Use FROG @ease Test Strips with @ease. With FROG Serene, use standard bromine test strips.

Can I put bromine tablets straight into the spa water?

No. Use them in a compatible feeder or floater as directed, rather than placing them directly on spa surfaces.

Which sanitizer should I use in a Softub?

Softcare by Softub Chlorine is the chlorinating granule in Softub’s own Softcare line. The Softub FROG Filter Mate adds a mineral sanitizer inside the filter area and is used together with chlorine or bromine that you add separately.
