Soak or spray: which hot tub filter cleaner do I need?
Deep clean (soak): Leisure Time Filter Cleaner is a concentrate you mix with water and soak the cartridge in for at least three hours or overnight. It is the one for oils, lotions, grease, scale and mineral buildup that a rinse leaves behind.
Quick clean (spray): Leisure Time Instant Filter Cartridge Cleaner sprays on, sits for a few minutes and rinses off with a garden hose. Use it for routine cleaning between soaks.
Softub owners: Softcare Instant Filter Cleaner is Softub’s own filter cleaner, formerly sold as Filter Renu.
Every time: the High Pressure Nozzle fits a garden hose and rinses deep between the pleats, before and after any cleaner.

Rinse between the pleats weekly. Filter Friday, the first Friday of each month, is the monthly backstop for the weeks you miss. Use a filter cleaner every month or two, or sooner if the water stops clearing the way it used to.
A soak cleaner is a concentrate: you mix it with water and leave the cartridge in it for hours, which gives it time to break down oils and scale deep in the pleats. A spray cleaner works in minutes and rinses off, so it suits routine cleaning between soaks.
Rinsing removes loose debris. It does not remove body oils, lotions and mineral scale, which are what make a filter look gray and slow the water down. That is the job of a filter cleaner.

No. Cleaning restores a cartridge that is dirty, not one that is worn out. If the pleats are torn or flattened, the end caps are cracked, or the filter is still gray after a soak, it is time for a replacement hot tub filter.
