Cal Spas XL 5.5 kW Flo-Thru Heater, 15 Inch, Titanium – Direct Replacement

This is the replacement Cal Spas XL Series flo-thru heater: 5.5 kW at 230V, 15″ long, with a titanium heating element. It is the titanium version of the XL heater. The same heater is also made with an Incoloy element, and your old heater’s part number tells you which one you have.

Heaters are matched by part number, not by photo. Cal Spas has used several heaters that look similar but belong to different control systems. Check the label on your old heater first.

Specifications

  • Heater type: flo-thru (water passes through the heater tube)
  • Heater output: 5.5 kW
  • Voltage: 230V
  • Housing: 2″ x 15″ stainless steel flo-thru
  • Connections: 2″ slip tailpieces with gaskets
  • Pressure switch port: 1/8″ tap
  • High limit: auto-reset
  • Element: titanium
  • Series: Cal Spas XL
  • Manufacturer: HydroQuip

Titanium or Incoloy?

The two XL heaters are the same 5.5 kW, 15″, 230V assembly with different element metals. Order the one that matches your old part number. If your label shows a titanium (TI) number, this is your heater. If it shows a plain XL heater number, order the Incoloy XL heater. Titanium elements are generally chosen for their resistance to corrosion, and this titanium heater also replaces an Incoloy XL heater, so it works as an upgrade.

Compatibility & Installation

  • For Cal Spas spas that use the XL Series 5.5 kW flo-thru heater
  • Match the part number on your old heater’s label (the full list is in the FAQ below)
  • Check the voltage: this heater is 230V
  • The pressure switch and sensors are not included. Move them over from your old heater, or replace a worn switch at the same time with the Cal Spas heater pressure switch and pressure switch harness
  • Drain the spa, or isolate the heater, before you open the plumbing. The 2″ slip tailpieces and gaskets come with the heater

Before you start: turn off power at the breaker. Heater replacement involves 230V wiring. If you’re not comfortable working inside the equipment bay, hire a qualified spa technician.

After you install: refill the spa and bleed any trapped air from the pump and heater before you turn the heat on. A heater with an air pocket can overheat or dry-fire.

What’s in the Box

One Cal Spas XL 5.5 kW titanium flo-thru heater assembly with 2″ slip tailpieces and gaskets, as pictured. The pressure switch and sensors are not included. Reuse yours, or order the pressure switch and harness separately.

Common Symptoms of a Failing Heater

  • No heat, or very slow heating, when the water is flowing well
  • The GFCI trips as soon as the heater comes on (often a shorted element)
  • Water leaking from the heater tube or at a union
  • Scale or burn marks on the element terminals

Check the filter first. A dirty filter cuts the flow through the heater, and that causes most “no heat” calls. Pull the filter, run the spa and see if it heats. A bad pressure switch or sensor can also stop the heater even when the element is fine.

Replacement Information

Replaces the older-style Balboa / Cal Spas XL heat exchanger heater. On the original, the heating element was wrapped around the outside of the heater housing. This replacement is an in-line flo-thru heater with a replaceable element inside the tube, so a future element failure doesn’t mean buying the whole heater again (replacement 5.5 kW element). It covers both the titanium and the Incoloy XL heater numbers listed in the FAQ below.

Cal Spas XL Titanium Heater FAQs

It fits Cal Spas that use the XL Series 5.5 kW, 230V, 15″ flo-thru heater with a titanium element. Match the number on your old heater. This assembly (HydroQuip 26-0011-F-RS-K) replaces Cal Spas C2550-0011TI, HEA14100300 and HEA14100470. If you can’t read your label, send photos through the fit-check form above.

Only the element metal. Both are 5.5 kW, 230V and 15″ long. Titanium numbers (like C2550-0011TI) take this heater. Plain numbers (like C2550-0011, HEA14100120 or XL5.5) take the Incoloy version, HydroQuip 26-0011-7S-K. This titanium heater also replaces those Incoloy numbers, so it works as an upgrade.

The usual signs are no heat with good water flow, a GFCI that trips when the heater turns on, or a leak at the heater. Check the filter, the pressure switch and the temperature sensors first, because any of them can stop the heater even when the element is fine.

No. The heater comes with 2″ slip tailpieces and gaskets, but not the pressure switch or sensors. Most owners move those over from the old heater. If your pressure switch is old or corroded, replace it now: the heater has a 1/8″ pressure switch tap for the 25 amp switch (HydroQuip 34-0019-D-K, replaces 3010P / 4010P) and the Balboa 21223 harness.

Many owners do. Turn off power at the breaker, drain the spa or close the valves, and use new union gaskets. The heater is wired at 230V, so hire a qualified spa technician if you’re not comfortable with electrical work.

It’s usually air trapped in the plumbing, or low flow from a dirty filter. Turn the power off, bleed the air from the pump and heater, check the filter, then power back up. If the message keeps coming back, a sensor or the pressure switch may be the problem.
