How to Match Your South Seas Control Panel

The topside control is the most common electronic repair on South Seas spas — buttons wear out, displays fade, and overlays crack from sun and sanitizer exposure. It’s also one of the simplest fixes if you order the right panel. Match in two steps:

Step 1 — Serial number. South Seas spas built before February 2021 use Balboa topsides. Serial numbers beginning 21XXXXX and later use Gecko. The panels look almost identical — the serial number is the only reliable identifier.

Step 2 — Pump count. South Seas panels are configured for 1 pump, 2 pumps, or 3 pumps. Count your jet pumps or check your model in your owner’s manual.

Overlay or complete panel? If your buttons and display work but the decal surface is peeling or faded, the overlay is the failed part. If buttons don’t respond or the display is blank or garbled, you need the complete topside. Both are available for every pump configuration in Balboa and Gecko versions — and if your panel is 8+ years old with a failed overlay, the buttons underneath are aging at the same rate, so compare a complete topside before ordering twice.

How do I know which South Seas control panel replacement I need?

Two things: serial number and pump count. Serials beginning 21XXXXX and later take Gecko panels; earlier South Seas spas take Balboa. Then match your 1, 2, or 3 pump configuration. Balboa 1–2 pump South Seas panels include the VLS620S style (ART33-0648-08); Gecko panels for 2021+ spas include ART-33-2115-40.

My display works but the buttons are hard to read. Do I need a new panel?

That’s an overlay problem — the printed decal surface over the buttons. South Seas overlays are available for 1, 2, and 3 pump panels in both Balboa and Gecko versions. If the panel is also old or the buttons feel stiff, compare a complete topside — buttons and overlay age together.

Can I put a Gecko panel on my pre-2021 Balboa South Seas spa?

No. The topside must match the pack below the cabinet — a Gecko panel only communicates with a Gecko pack, and a Balboa panel only with a Balboa pack. Switching manufacturers means replacing the complete system, pack and panel together.

What do the icons on my South Seas control panel mean?

If your panel shows an error code, check the manual’s troubleshooting section before replacing parts; many codes point to flow or sensor issues rather than the panel itself.
