South Seas Control System Buying Guide
The control system is the electronic heart of your South Seas spa — the spa pack and circuit board below the cabinet, and the control panel you press buttons on. Every South Seas control system replacement starts with one question: what year is your spa?
South Seas changed control systems in 2021. Artesian Spas transitioned the South Seas line from the Balboa operating system to the Gecko pack and topside for all orders in production on and after February 4, 2021. Spas with serial numbers beginning 21XXXXX and later run Gecko; earlier serials run Balboa. The change was below the cabinet and the panels look almost identical from the outside — identify by serial number, never by appearance.
Which component failed? A completely dead spa, stuck relays, or no heat usually points to the circuit board or spa pack. Buttons not responding or a blank display with the spa otherwise running usually points to the control panel. If your buttons work but the decal surface is peeling or faded, the overlay is the failed part — overlays and complete topsides are both available for every South Seas pump configuration in Balboa and Gecko versions.

How do I know if my South Seas spa has a Balboa or Gecko control system?
Check your serial number. Artesian Spas transitioned South Seas from Balboa to Gecko for all orders in production on and after February 4, 2021. Serial numbers beginning 21XXXXX and later use Gecko packs and topside controls; earlier serials use Balboa. The topsides look nearly identical, so the serial number — not the panel’s appearance — is the reliable way to identify your South Seas control system.
My South Seas control panel is not responding. What should I check first?
If the spa still runs (pumps, heat) but the panel is dead or garbled, the topside panel or its cable connection is the likely failure. If the whole spa is dead, check your GFCI breaker first, then the spa pack. Replacement South Seas control panels must match your system manufacturer — Balboa or Gecko by serial number — and your pump count.
How do I reset my South Seas spa control panel?
Most South Seas control panel issues resolve with a power cycle: turn off the breaker, wait 30 seconds, restore power, and let the system complete its priming cycle. If an error code returns after the power cycle, note the code and check your owner’s manual — South Seas owner’s manuals by year are in the South Seas Resource Center.
Do I need a whole new South Seas control panel, or just an overlay?
If your buttons respond and the display works but the decal surface is peeling, cracked, or unreadable, the overlay is the failed part. If buttons have stopped responding or the display is blank or garbled, you need the complete topside control. If your panel is 8+ years old and the overlay has failed, the buttons underneath are aging at the same rate — compare a complete topside against ordering twice.
