How to Start Up and Maintain a Hot Tub with the FROG® Serene® Inline System

This guide is for spas with the FROG Serene Inline System built into the shell — a cartridge well with a round cap that holds a blue Mineral Cartridge and a green Bromine Cartridge. It’s a bromine system: the minerals kill bacteria alongside a low, steady bromine feed, using up to 50% less bromine than tablets alone. If your Serene floats in the water on a green lilypad, use the Serene Floating guide instead.

Big rule: Balance your water first — sanitizer comes second. Most hot tub problems aren’t sanitizer failures; they’re water balance problems.

Many spas with a built-in FROG well can run either Serene (bromine) or @ease (SmartChlor chlorine) cartridges — but never both at once, and switching from bromine to @ease requires a full drain and refill.

Who the Serene Inline System Is Best For

Serene Inline suits owners who prefer bromine’s wider effective pH range and softer feel, and whose spa already has the cartridge well plumbed into the shell (common on several Artesian family brands, and factory-equipped on select models from other manufacturers). Nothing floats in the water, cartridge changes take under a minute, and the dial settings meter bromine automatically for spas from 200 to 600 gallons.

Products and Supplies You’ll Need

Step 1: Prep, Fill, and Handle Metals

Before you fill

  • Rinse/clean the filters (or install new ones).
  • Open all jets, set valves normally, close the drain, check pump unions and drain plugs.
  • If the spa sat unused, purge the plumbing with a pipe & jet cleanser before the fresh fill.

Fill the right way

Fill through a hose pre-filter, through the filter compartment when possible. FROG’s Serene instructions specifically flag source water high in iron or other metals — treat it with Leisure Time Metal Gone at fill time. If sanitizer disappears fast later, test for phosphates and treat with SeaKlear Free & Klear.

Step 2: Balance Your Water

Balance in this order: Total Alkalinity → pH → Calcium Hardness

FROG Serene target ranges

Total Alkalinity: 80–120 ppm
pH: 7.2–7.8
Calcium Hardness: 150–250 ppm

These are FROG’s published ranges for the Serene Inline System. Alkalinity first, always. FROG’s inline instructions say to add balancers in small increments, one at a time, jets on, and wait about 6 hours before retesting and adding more. High hardness? Partially drain about 6 inches and top up with softer water. Low? Add a calcium increaser.

Dosing: Hot tubs vary in size and water capacity. Always follow the dosage instructions on the product bottle for your hot tub’s gallon capacity.

Step 3: Start Up the Serene Inline System

1. Establish the initial residual with Jump Start

After balancing and before loading cartridges, establish an initial 1.0–2.0 ppm free chlorine residual with FROG Jump Start — one packet per 600 gallons. (Yes, the startup shock is chlorine-based even for this bromine system — that’s FROG’s published procedure; the tub runs on bromine from the cartridges afterward.)

2. Set the cartridges

Set the blue Mineral Cartridge to #6 and leave it there for its whole life. Set the green Bromine Cartridge by your spa’s gallons:

Spa size (gallons)Serene Bromine Cartridge setting
2000
250–3001
3502
4003
4504
500–5505
6006

Source: FROG Serene Inline System operating instructions setting chart. Your spa’s owner’s manual lists its gallon capacity.

3. Load the holder

Turn the jets off — never open the inline cap while jets are running. Open the cap, remove the holder (push down, turn counter-clockwise 1/8 turn, pull out), snap the Mineral Cartridge into the section marked “Minerals” and the Bromine Cartridge into the lower section, then reinsert the holder, lock it clockwise, and replace the cap. Putting the bromine cartridge in the minerals slot causes over-bromination and shortens cartridge life — match the labels.

Step 4: First Week — Dial It In

For the first week, test daily with FROG Test Strips and adjust the bromine cartridge up or down one setting per day until the water holds FROG’s ideal range of 1.0–2.0 ppm bromine. That low target is by design — the minerals carry part of the load. Never let bromine fall below 1.0 ppm. Remember: jets off before every cartridge adjustment.

Step 5: Weekly Maintenance Routine

Weekly “5-minute” routine

  • Test water (alkalinity → pH → bromine 1.0–2.0 ppm).
  • Adjust only what’s needed, in small steps.
  • Shock weekly with FROG Maintain (non-chlorine, single-dose packet) — more often under heavy use.
  • Run the filtration system per your spa manufacturer so water keeps moving through the inline well.
  • Rinse filters weekly; deep-clean monthly with Leisure Time Filter Clean.
  • Wipe the waterline if a ring forms.

Twice a year

Lubricate the inline holder o-ring with a silicone lubricant so the cap keeps sealing properly.

Step 6: Cartridge Replacement Schedule

CartridgeReplaceHow you know
Bromine (green)When empty — typically every 2–4 weeks depending on spa size, setting, and useBromine won’t hold 1.0 ppm; pull the holder (jets off) and drain the cartridge to confirm it’s empty
Mineral (blue)Every 4 months, or at every drain & refillCalendar — minerals are spent even if media remains inside

Don’t reuse spent cartridges. An expired mineral cartridge is the most common hidden cause of “bromine can’t keep up” — without working minerals, Serene’s low bromine level isn’t enough on its own.

Troubleshooting

Cloudy water or low bromine

  • Check water balance first — pH and alkalinity must be in range for Serene to work.
  • Check the bromine cartridge; replace if empty.
  • Check the mineral cartridge’s age — over 4 months means replace it now.
  • Shock with FROG Maintain.
  • Persistent trouble? Test phosphates — they feed algae, and algae burns up bromine.

High bromine

With the jets off, remove the green bromine cartridge from the holder and leave it out until bromine drops to 2.0 ppm. Lower its setting by one, reinstall, and retest in 24 hours. Repeat until the water holds 1.0–2.0 ppm.

When to Drain, Purge, and Refill

Drain and refill on your manufacturer’s schedule or whenever the water becomes hard to manage. Purge the plumbing with a pipe & jet cleanser before draining, speed the drain with a utility pump, and install a fresh mineral cartridge with every refill.

Safety: Serene is a bromine system. Never add chlorine granules to its routine, never put loose bromine tablets or any granules into the inline well — it takes FROG cartridges only — and never mix chlorine and bromine products anywhere in the spa. Switching this spa to FROG @ease (chlorine) requires a full drain and refill first.

FROG Serene Inline System FAQs

The blue mineral cartridge stays on #6 for its whole life. The green bromine cartridge is set by spa size: 200 gallons = 0, 250-300 = 1, 350 = 2, 400 = 3, 450 = 4, 500-550 = 5, 600 = 6 – then adjusted one setting per day during the first week until the water holds 1.0-2.0 ppm bromine.
The systems use the same chemistry and the same setting logic, but the inline system loads its cartridges into a holder inside the spa shell (green bromine cartridge), while the floating system snaps them into a lilypad floater (yellow bromine cartridge). Follow the guide that matches your spa – the loading procedures differ.
FROG’s ideal range is 1.0-2.0 ppm bromine, never below 1.0 ppm. It’s intentionally lower than a tablets-only bromine tub because the mineral cartridge shares the sanitizing load. Read it with FROG Test Strips, which are made for these low levels.
No. Turn the jets off before opening the cap or pulling the cartridge holder – FROG’s instructions state this on the label. Water moving through the well can force pressurized water out of an open cap.
FROG’s published startup for Serene uses Jump Start to establish a quick 1.0-2.0 ppm sanitizer residual in fresh water. After that one-time startup, the tub runs on bromine from the cartridges, with weekly non-chlorine FROG Maintain shocks.
We stock the FROG inline housing assembly, cartridge holder, and caps for Artesian-family spas – see the housing assembly and cartridge holder. Caps come in light gray and dark gray to match your shell.
