How to Balance a Hot Tub Filled with Well Water

Well water is the hardest starting point in hot tub ownership: it commonly carries iron, manganese, and other metals, runs high in hardness and alkalinity, and can arrive with organics that eat sanitizer from day one. None of that makes a well-water tub impossible — it means the fill itself is a maintenance step, done in a particular order. Get the fill right and the rest of the season behaves; skip it and you chase green water and stains for months.

The order that works: know your water → pre-filter the fill → sequester metals immediately → balance TA, then pH, then hardness → start the sanitizer → keep treating metals at every top-off and refill.

Step 1: Know Your Water Before It’s in the Tub

Test the source, not just the spa: a strip dipped at the tap tells you hardness, alkalinity, and pH before you commit 400 gallons. Softub goes further for its owners — its instructions recommend having your dealer test the source water before filling. If sanitizer later vanishes mysteriously, test phosphates too — well and ag-area water can carry them in.

Step 2: Fill through a pre-filter

A hose-end pre-filter is the single best dollar a well-water owner spends. A pre-filter reduces what comes in; it doesn’t make well water perfect, which is why the next step still matters.

Step 3: Sequester metals immediately

Add Leisure Time Metal Gone (or Softcare Metal Gone in a Softub) right after filling, before the water heats and before any shock. Sequestrant holds dissolved iron and manganese in solution so oxidation can’t drop them out as stains and tinted water. Hot tubs vary in size and water capacity — dose per the label for your actual gallons, and re-dose at every refill; the sequestered metals leave only when the water does.

“Green” alone doesn’t diagnose anything — timing does. Instant tint after oxidizer = metals; slow build with weak sanitizer = organics. True algae is rare in a covered, sanitized hot tub.


Balancing Well Water (and the Softened-Water Question)

Balance in the standard order — total alkalinity (80–120 ppm), then pH, then calcium hardness — expecting the first two to take multiple label-dosed rounds on hard well water; our high total alkalinity guide covers the acid-plus-aeration cycle in detail. If hardness tests far above range, partial dilution with softer water beats fighting it chemically.

Softened water: useful tool, with rules

A household softener exchanges calcium and magnesium for sodium — that’s its job, and it’s why fully softened fill water tests near zero hardness. (It does not reliably remove dissolved iron or manganese; softeners have limited iron capacity, so metal treatment is still required.) Spa guidance splits by manufacturer, and the manufacturer wins:

  • Softub prohibits it outright: the owner’s guide says to bypass any water-softening device when filling — softened water is “considered chemically treated” and should not be used to fill a Softub. The Blu Fusion TS instructions we publish carry the same do-not-use rule.
  • For other acrylic spas, some owners blend softened and unsoftened water to land hardness in range. There’s no universal “50/50” recipe — the right blend depends entirely on your raw hardness, so blend, circulate, test, and adjust with a calcium booster if you land low. Very soft water is also foam-prone and, in an acrylic tub, still needs hardness brought up to your system’s range.
Pre-dissolving granular products (where the label allows it): scoop clean spa water into a clean, dedicated plastic bucket, add the measured product to the water — never water onto concentrated chemical — stir until dissolved, then add as directed with the jets running. One product per bucket, ever. This keeps undissolved granules from sitting against vinyl or acrylic, which in a Softub is an explicit warranty concern.

Because the shock oxidized dissolved iron or manganese, not because algae bloomed. Metals that were invisible in solution drop out of it the moment a strong oxidizer hits them, tinting the water green to brown. Sequestrant plus a metal-focused clarifier like Bright & Clear clears it; a pre-filter and Metal Gone at fill time prevent it.
Per the manufacturer’s published description, its proprietary media “effectively removes metals & other contaminants” from fill water and is rated for about 10,000 gallons. It reduces what enters the tub – it is not a promise of laboratory-pure water, which is why metal sequestrant at fill time is still part of the routine on well water.
Check your spa manufacturer first: Softub explicitly says to bypass the softener when filling, and the Blu Fusion TS salt system carries the same rule. Where the manufacturer allows it, softened water is a blending tool for very hard supplies – mix with raw water, test, and bring hardness into range rather than running fully softened, foam-prone, near-zero-hardness water.
Not dependably. Softeners are built to exchange calcium and magnesium; they capture only limited dissolved iron and foul when overworked with it. If your well runs iron, plan on a pre-filter at the hose and a sequestrant in the tub regardless of what the softener is doing inside the house.
At every fill and refill, per the product label – and many well-water owners add a maintenance dose after heavy top-offs, since every hose-in brings new metals. Sequestrant holds metals in solution rather than removing them, so the protection leaves with the old water each drain.
